Privacy Policy for 214
Last updated: 19 May 2026
This privacy policy describes how the 214 mobile app ("the app", "we", "our") handles your information. The app is developed and published by Jack Woodmansey ("the developer").
Summary
214 does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data with the developer or any third party. All data stays on your device or in your own iCloud account.
Data the app handles
Ascent records
When you mark a fell as bagged, the app stores the date, any notes you add, and which round it belongs to. This data is stored:
- On your device, in the app's local storage.
- In your personal iCloud Key-Value Store, so it can sync between your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Your iCloud data is managed entirely by Apple. The developer has no access to it. See Apple's iCloud privacy for details.
Location data
If you enable peak notifications, the app uses your device's location to detect when you arrive at a fell and trigger a local notification. Location data:
- Is processed on your device only.
- Is never transmitted to the developer or any server.
- Is used solely to monitor geofenced regions around the 20 nearest unbagged fells.
You can revoke location permission at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → 214.
Notifications
The app sends local notifications (generated on your device) when you arrive at a fell. No push notifications are sent from any server. You can revoke notification permission at any time in Settings → Notifications → 214.
Wikipedia content
When you view a fell's detail screen, the app may fetch a summary from Wikipedia's public API to display information about the fell. This request is sent directly from your device to Wikipedia; the developer does not see or log these requests. Wikipedia's privacy policy applies: foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Privacy_policy.
Data the app does not collect
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No advertising identifiers
- No crash reporting sent to the developer
- No user accounts or sign-up
- No contact list, photos, microphone, or camera access
- No payment or financial information
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect any information from children. As no data is collected at all, no special handling is required.
Exporting your data
You can export a complete copy of your data from the app at any time. The export produces a JSON file containing all your ascent records, rounds, notes, and timestamps in a portable, machine-readable format. The file can be saved to the Files app, shared via any iOS share-sheet target, or re-imported into 214 on another device. Use the export option in the app's Settings screen.
Because the export covers everything the app holds about your usage, it serves as a full data-portability mechanism - no request to the developer is required, and the developer is not involved in the export at any point.
Data retention and deletion
The app does not create user accounts, so there is no account to delete. All data is held on your device and in your iCloud. To delete it:
- Local data: uninstall the app, or use the in-app clear options.
- iCloud data: go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → 214 on your iOS device.
Your rights under UK / EU data protection law
Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR you have rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection to processing of your personal data. Because the app does not collect, process, or store any personal data on the developer's behalf, there is no personal data held by the developer in relation to which these rights can be exercised. Data held locally on your device or in your own iCloud is under your direct control: you can exercise the equivalent of your right of access and right of portability at any time using the in-app export feature, and the equivalent of your right of erasure using the in-app clear options or by uninstalling the app and removing its iCloud data as described above.
If you believe your data protection rights have been infringed, you may lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or, if you are based in the EU, with your local supervisory authority.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page and the "Last updated" date above will be revised.
